Emissivity
The infrared radiation an object emits depends on its temperature and on the radiation properties of its surface, described by the emissivity (ε). A black body has an emissivity of 1.0; a mirror typically about 0.1. If the emissivity set on the thermometer is too high, the reading will be lower than the true temperature (for targets hotter than the surroundings).
Determining an unknown emissivity
- Measure the true temperature with a contact instrument, then adjust the emissivity until the infrared reading matches.
- Low-temperature models: coat part of the surface with black paint of emissivity 0.98, set 0.98 and measure it, then measure the adjacent surface and adjust the emissivity until the readings match.
- Otherwise use a table of typical emissivities. These are averages; the real value depends on material temperature, viewing angle, geometry, thickness, surface finish, spectral range and transmission.
